Jessica Erlendson van Remmen-Embracing the Emotional Aspect of Perimenopause
Jessica Erlendson van Remmen, owner of Ovation Studio & holistic perimenopause coach, discusses the myths & facts surrounding perimenopause (PeriM) & menopause (MenoP). PeriM is the period leading up to menopause, which is defined as 1 year w/o a period. She emphasizes that PeriM can look different for each person. It can include symptoms like irregular periods, trouble sleeping, anxiety, & heavier periods. She highlights the importance of seeking medical help & not dismissing symptoms, as many women are often told that there is nothing wrong with them despite experiencing great discomfort. Jessica started the Canadian Peri Menopause Support Group to provide a community for women to discuss their experiences & find resources for perimenopause. She encourages women to explore different treatment options, including medication, & to find what works best for them. We also touch on the emotional aspect of transitioning into perimenopause, the acceptance of the end of childbearing years as well as alcohol & its effects on hormones in PeriM & menopause. Women in PeriM are in a vulnerable position due to heightened anxiety & stress. Alcohol can temporarily treat anxiety but can also disrupt sugar regulation & exacerbate hormonal imbalances. We shifted to andropause, the male equivalent of menopause, which can also lead to decreased sex drive & other symptoms. The importance of understanding & addressing the physiological differences between men & women in research & healthcare was emphasized. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was discussed, with the misconception that estrogen causes cancer being debunked. The conversation concluded with praise for the creation of a supportive community for women going through PeriM & menopause. Jessica discusses the importance of creating a safe & supportive community for women going through PeriM & MenoP. She shares how her private Facebook group, Canadian Peri - Meno - Pause Society, provides a space for women to connect, share, & find support. Jessica shares her upcoming symposium, where experts will discuss various topics related to PeriM & MenoP, & offers tips for managing PeriM, including reducing alcohol consumption, increasing protein intake, & setting boundaries.
